Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to complete their diploma thesis independenly on the basis of the methodical and professional support and the input provided during the seminar and the critical examination of other diploma theses and exams.

Subject of course

  • Development of a research and planning design for the diploma thesis
  • Methods of independent scientific and planning work
  • Presentation and critical reflection of theses and (interim) results (lectures on one's own work, discussant for other participants)
  • Progress report (documentation as journal)

It is also possible to join the seminar during the course of a semester, provided that places are still available. If you are interested, please contact a supervisor by e-mail in advance.

Admission requirements

  • Established questions and supervision of the diploma thesis
  • Disposition incl. abstract of own diploma thesis
  • Letter of motivation for diploma students whose diploma thesis is not supervised by the Research Unit of Regional Planning and Regional Development: Presentation of the regional context of the topic of the diploma thesis (regional planning and regional development, regional development processes, ...)
  • The documents are to be sent IN ADVANCE via e-mail to the lecturers.

Examination modalities

Requirements for the positive completion of the diploma seminar

  • Attendance and active participation in at least four seminar units
  • Preparation of two individual sessions: each graduand gets the opportunity to design the unit within a fixed time frame so that an input for their own diploma thesis can be gained. Form and setting (e.g. presentation, mini conference, role plays) are to be chosen freely. Appointment reservation required.
  • Participation in a self-selected diploma exam and one-sided reflection on this diploma thesis and the exam ("What have I learned from it?").
  • Feedback (oral) and review (in writing) on the progress of another diploma thesis. Reviewing has to be arranged by the students themselves.
  • Keeping and submission of a journal (approx. 5 pages of reflection on the diploma thesis process).
  • For graduands whose diploma thesis is not supervised at the Research Unit of Regional Planning and Regional Development, a short seminar paper on the topic "My topic in the regional context" is requied additionally.
  • All documents, which are necessary as proof of achievement for the completion of the seminar, must be uploaded via TUWEL collected in a single document (pdf).
