Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently record, reflect and scientifically and strategically process specific spatial conditions, trends, future perspectives and spatial planning control options using suitable methods (submission of the bachelor thesis) - all this using an example of a lake region.

Subject of course

In many places there is a commitment to provide accessibility to lakes and other natural areas for the general public. In some places, this has been achieved. However, along wide stretches of lakeshore suitable for bathing private houses, lodging establishments and various infrastructural facilities have been developed, and no-trespassing signs line the shores. The situation has not yet been systematically investigated in Austria. What is the real condition of the lakes?

Possible topics for the bachelor thesis:

... the specific characteristics of lakes as an essential resource for the future development of lakeshore areas,

... the special relevance of lakes for the common good, especially with regard to accessibility,

... the various interests of use (esp. settlement, tourism, leisure, nature conservation, traffic, architecture) at and on lakes and their coordination,

... inter-communal and regional cooperation strategies for lake areas,

... Strategies and measures for improved public accessibility.

Note: The course is ideally taken in combination with elective module 4 "Cooperation: Region - Lake Sight".

Teaching methods

The bachelor seminar enables students to engage in a largely self-organized, interactive and practice-oriented work process for the preparation of their indivudual bachelor thesis. The students work as a "peer group" that supports and advises each other in the elaboration of questions and the writing of the thesis.

Students are challenged to identify and elaborate current and relevant research questions and planning tasks on a selected lake for their individual thesis from the selected problem areas supported by the peer group and supervisor.

Method range:

- Deskresearch and reflection

- On-site research

- Participation and discussion at events relevant to the topic (see module 4)

- Interviews with local and regional actors

- Specific methods appropriate to the research question such as document analysis, mapping, storytelling, social design, scenario methods, ...

- Analysis and identification of possible courses of action via text, graphics and plan

- Keeping a research diary

- Intermediate and final presentations - Discourse on lakes.
