The course will introduce and illustrate social networks as a suitable conceptual tool to depict and empirically analyze complex datasets. In particular, the concept of multi-dimensional networks (where nodes can be people, organizations, documents, keywords/concepts, analytic tools) will be explored and empirical applications will be shown. Moreover, students will be introduced to main concepts and tools of social network analysis in order to translate the social network theoretical perspective into empirical research paths.
(This course will be held by Noshir Contractor, from Northwestern University, USA)
Towards that goal, this course begins by reviewing some of the theoretical and methodological accomplishments and challenges of contemporary research on networks. Next the course offers an analytic framework that can be used to specify and statistically test simultaneously multilevel multi-theoretical hypotheses about the structural tendencies of networks. The course concludes with empirical examples that illustrate some of the capabilities of this framework.
