  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture

Aim of course

Overview over the fundamentals of data communication (speech, audio, video and data). The lower layers of both OSI and Internet are discussed. Global and local functionalities of the Internet and Intranets shall be made transparent. Special focus is on fundamentals and principles, as well as the key insight that networks are not exclusively built on IP-based technology.

Subject of course

Navigation system: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, probability theory basics and binary random sequences, correlation, pseudo-random number sequences, navigation, satellite sequences, localisation, data transmission, encryption, exercises.

Mobile Telephony: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, channel estimation via training sequences, convolutional codes for error correction, trellis, Viterbi-Algorithm, user identity, international roaming, exercises.

MP3-Player: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, digital signal processing, Fibonacci-numbers, Z-transform, linear time-tinvariant systems, exercises.

CD-Player: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, Modulo, prime field, Galois field GF(p), error correction with Reed-Solomon-Codes GF(7), discrete Fourier-Transform (DFT), Euclidian algorithm, error corrections with  RS-Code in GF(p), Decoding with the Euclidian agorithm, exercises.

DVD: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, Information theory, source coding, Shannon's uncertainty, Entropy, Shannon's source coding theorem, Huffman-coding, arithmetic coding, exercises

Internet: Problem setting, mathematical foundations, multiple access, Slotted ALOHA, reliable data transmission between two computers, Stop-and-wait ARQ, calculation of the shortest path in the network, Dijkstra-algorithm, cryptology, Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA-) encryption, exercises.
