Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to distinguish between optimum and robust communication systems. The students are able to design a robust and reliable system and are able to evaluate the performance.

Subject of course

Motivation. Interference reduction in general: Communication environment, Orthogonality, Figure of merits, Complexity, Interference avoidance, Robustness, Reliability, Communication resources, Responsibility. Conventional binary communication system. Spread-Spectrum System. Discrimination between robust systems and systems employing interference reduction. Principles of interference combating: Decorrelation, Interference reversal. Interference reduction techniques: Whitening, Estimating, Transformation, Nonlinearity, Orthogonality. Advanced interference combating techniques: Preventive interference combating for future wireless applications, (Adaptive) nonlinear pre-processing, Cooperative and non-cooperative interference combating. Concluding considerations: Evolution of interference combating techniques, Future of interference combating techniques. Brief literature review.

As a representative of robustness the spread-spectrum technology is presented. In detail: Principle, figure of merit, synchronization, RAKE, performance, signal-design, CDMA, multi-carrier CDMA.

Teaching methods

The contents of the course will be presented with mathematical models and partially visualized with simulations.
