2023S, VU, 3.5h, 4.5EC

## Properties

• Semester hours: 3.5
• Credits: 4.5
• Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
• LectureTube course
• Format: Presence

## Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and apply the methods described under the item "Subject of Course". The theoretical models are primarily based on mathematical methods. The students are able to solve basic problems related to telecommunication system design and are equipped with the necessary background knowledge to understand state-of-the-art telecommunication systems.

## Subject of course

The lecture is showcasing essential principles behind modern communication systems and provides a solid introduction to the foundations of communication theory. The main focus is on digital communication systems. The lecture contains the following main topics:

1. Signals and systems (short review)
2. Analog communication systems
3. Digital modulation
4. Probability and random processes
5. Optimal demodulation and detection
6. Foundations of information theory (if time allows)
7. Source- and channel coding (if time allows)

## Teaching methods

The contents of the course will be presented with mathematical models and partially visualized with simulations.

## Mode of examination

Written

Please send questions regarding the exercises (not the lecture) to tk138@list.tuwien.ac.at only!

first class: Thu, 2.3.2023 at 09:00 (EI2).

Mode of exercise:

• Enrollment in the TUWEL course is automatic (beginning to mid of March) for all who have registered to the TISS course.
• Preliminary discussion of the exercises during the lecture. The date will be announced in time.
• Three exercise units during three exercise weeks.
• Exercise test at the end of the semester and/or Matlab exercises.
• More details: see TUWEL (after automatic enrollment; self-enrollment is not supported)

## Examination modalities

Written test: the written test at the semester-end consists of calculation examples as well as theoretical questions and therefore serves as a final test for the exercise part and the theoretical part of the VU. To take part in this test, the mandatory part of the exercises has to be successfully completed (see TUWEL). A positive completion of the LVA requires both a positive exercise part (requirements see TUWEL) and a positive theory part (>= 50% of the theory questions answered correctly).

The exercise-part will be conducted via TUWEL. Details and modalities of the exercise-part are described in TUWEL. The TUWEL course will be opened mid to end of March. Please register for the course in TISS, such that we can automatically enroll you in the TUWEL course.

If the test ist negative, there will be a second opportunity at the beginning of autumn. Only the latest taken test counts for the final grade.

If only the theoretical par is negative (positive grade on exercise part), it is also possible to complete this part at a later exam date.

## Literature

The lecture slides will be made available for download. The lecture is largely based on "Introduction to Communication Systems", U. Madhow, Cambridge University Press. Some copies of the book are available in the library. Additional copies will be obtained as needed. The author also provides a freely accessible PDF file for download on his website (see Google).

## Previous knowledge

It is assumed that you have a fair knowledge about signal and systems including the relevant mathematical tools.
