Aim of course

Introduction into lossy source coding, its theoretical foundations and practical coding schemes.

Subject of course

Source coding is a key technology for mobile radio, MP3, JPG, and video transmission. We discuss the theoretical foundations for lossy source coding (rate distortion theory and asymptotic quantisation theory) as well as practical coding schemes and vector quantisation. For practically relevant correlated source signals we extend the theory and we also discuss practical code design which is structurally based on results from information theory. Those schemes include predictive coding, which is used e.g. in speech transmission in mobile radio, as well as subband coding, which is part of MP3.

IMPORTANT: This lecture course can be taken EITHER separately OR in conjunction with the lecture course "Drahtlose OFDM Systeme" / "Wireless OFDM Systems" given by Prof. Gerald Matz. In the latter case both lecture courses together can be combined form the advanced course 389.102 "Telecommunications Engineering/ Advanced Course" / "Übertragungstechnik, Vertiefung" (4 SWS), but students must indicate that they intend to do so as follows: When sitting the FIRST of the two exams, students must indicate whether they want to take the course(s) as 389.102 "Telecommunications Engineering/ Advanced Course" / "Übertragungstechnik, Vertiefung" with 4SWS OR as separate modules with 2SWS each. If students do NOT indicate any preference when sitting their first exam, the default assumption is that the courses are taken as separate modules. It is NOT possible to change this decision retrospectively.
