This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2021W, VO, 1.5h, 2.25EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 2.25
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to visualize ionospheric wave propagation of electromagnetic waves in the short wave spectrum and are able to select a suitable time of day, frequency, antenna type, transmission mode, and required transmit power for a successful short wave communication link between to arbitrary locations on earth. They are familiar with the most important rules in the ITU's Radio Regulations which define the rules of operation for international radio links. Finally, the students are familiar with the challenges and natural limits of wave propagation.

Subject of course

Fundamentals of the physics of ionospheric wave propagation, introduction to shortwave radio antennas, overview of analog and digital transmission for shortwave radio, introduction to the Radio Regulations (RR) in international law.

Three lectures (two hours each) and a practical exercise in the short wave lab in a small group in cooperation with the Radio-Amateur-Club of the TU Wien.

Teaching methods

In the lecture part, the foundations of ionospheric wave propagation, short wave radio antennas, transmission modes, and the RR are laid down. In the practical part in small student groups, the students exercise their skills with a transceiver experimentally.

Mode of examination

Immanent
