Aim of course

The goal of this course is a sound understanding about the realization and construction of high-performance networks and network components. Lecture given in english

Subject of course

Basic knowledge about key technologies and methods for the implementation of different network functions as well as possible realizations of network elements and systems are mediated. Current and practical information is relayed to students. PART A: Hardware Components, Systems and Interfaces (S. Aleksic) - Introduction - Technology development - Electronic components - Optical and opto-electronic components - Design of network elements - Structures and topologies inside the network elements - Architecture of switches, routers, network control servers - Implementation of physical layer, data link layer, network layer, higher layers - Implementation of - Implementation of- Hardware/Software Codesign - Technology specific components (electronic and optical transmission systems, SONET/SDH, Ethernet, FC, WDM, ATM XDSL, FTTX, Storage Area Networks) - Interfaces - Realizations of backplanes and interconnects - Interoperability and standardization - New approaches and future perspectives PART 2: Network technologies (H.R. van As) - Networking (Overview, addressing, availability, control, QoS, VPNs) - Circuit-switching and transmission networks (SDH, OTN, WDM) - Packet-switching networks (IP, ETH, MPLS, FR, ATM, OBS, OPS) - Fixed network access (LAN, xDSL, FTTH, CATV) - Wireless network access (WLAN, WiMax, WRAN, GSM/GPRS, UMTS, Satelite)
