Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and describe the operation principle of modern optical devices like (semiconductor laser, photodetectors, CCDs, modulators) as well as their specifications

Subject of course

Opto-electronic devices, semiconductor lasers (double heterostructure laser, quantum well laser, quantum cascade lasers,  gain bandwidth, design of active region, resonator and waveguide concepts (gain and index guiding), mode and wavelength control (DFB, VCSEL), divergence control, amplifier systems , dynamics and modulation of semiconductor lasers, detectors (photodiodes, CCD), response time, wavelength sensitivity, quantum efficiency, optical switches, arrays (coherent incoherent), Fourier-transform spectrometer, optical coherence tomography,  integrated optics,  integrated optical measurement systems,  display systems,  non-classical optical devices for quantum information processing, nano-photonic devices.
