After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
...take on the basic roles in scientific publications (author, reviewer).
...to apply scientific literature research.
... give constructive reviews.
...understand the procedures involved in the organization of scientific conferences.
The course is divided into a theoretical part with lectures and a practical part. The goal is to play with and experience the different roles involved in the organisation of a scientific conference (author, reviewer, program committee member).
After introducing the process of the lecture, different topics are presented that deepen the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's programme and are related to current research topics at ICT. Furthermore, the basics of scientific work and how to give constructive criticism are discussed.
The practical part comprises the writing and reviewing of contributions for a "conference" at the end of the semester. A written (one page) summary has to be prepared on the basis of a pre-selection of literature. The topic is taken from one of the research areas of the ICT. This paper is submitted to the "conference" and reviewed by the other students. A tool that is also used at real conferences is used for this purpose. The reviews are discussed at a seminar (Program Committee Meeting). Subsequently, the papers are revised taking into account the comments and presented at the "conference". The course is intended as preparation for writing a Bachelor's thesis, which can also be based on the research. Further information is available in the preliminary discussion of the LVA.
The proposed topics can be downloaded from the LVA website in TISS as of the presentation date.
For details about the different lecture topics and deadlines see the German version of this page.
