Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the structure and operating procedures of traction power generation and traction power distribution systems. The lecture is planned as a presentation event. For this purpose, they receive circuit variants and dimensioning examples for the individual components from the power plant side via the substations and catenary systems up to the energy transfer to the traction units. Information is provided on the current TSI (Standard of Interoperability) and the European Standards (EN). In addition, the application of the mandatory planning, construction, execution and acceptance/assessment criteria from the standards, directives and, in addition, the limit values is explained. The power and energy requirements for electric traction are derived from the fundamentals and formulas of traction mechanics.  The advantages and disadvantages of DC and AC systems are compared. These basics are further discussed with case studies and references to executed installations at DB AG, SNCF, SBB, ÖBB, etc. are given.

Subject of course

motivation for electrification (cost - benefit), traction-mechanics, railway systems (direct - alternating current systems), technical systems for generation and distribution of electricity for railway systems, design and construction of overhead lines, local traffic systems, unconventional railway systems, cost structure for electrification, influencing factors for energy consumption, basic dimensioning (rating)

Teaching methods

If the defined learning outcomes are achieved, estimates can be made of energy consumption, variables influencing energy consumption, voltage quality, voltage drops, current carrying capacity, transmission losses, infrastructure free space for current collectors, etc. For a better understanding of the lecture content, the knowledge from the lectures on electrical systems and mathematics is necessary as a basis for the calculations.
