Properties

  • Semester hours: 3.0
  • Credits: 4.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe the dynamics of rigid bodies
  • describe and analyze different effects of gyroscopes
  • describe and analyze the dynamics of simple rotors (rigid rotor, Lavalrotor)
  • balance rigid rotors
  • describe complex rotors using the finite element method

Subject of course

  • Repetition of the dynamics of point masses: Velocity and acceleration in different coordinate systems, transformation between different reference frames, conservations laws in point dynamics, description of systems of point masses
  • Dynamics of the rigid body: Kinetics of rigid bodies, moments of inertia and inertia tensor, Euler equations, conservation of energy in rigid bodies, theory of gyroscopes
  • Rotor dynamics: Rigid rotor in isotropic and anisotropic supports, balancing of rigid rotors, Lavalrotor with internal and external damping, transient behavior by running through critical speeds, description of complex rotors using the finite element method

Teaching methods

The contents of this lecture are elaborated and discussed based on lecture notes. Simple exercises are solved on a blackboard, Complex exercises are solved using Matlab or Maple.
