Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to  independently analyse energy systems for the supply with different energy sources, especially from an ecological, but also from an economic point of view. Furthermore, they understand the energy-economic aspects of climate change. After positive completion of this course, the students can apply the practice gained from their own exercises in the application-oriented use of what they have learned to climate-specific and economic issues in energy systems.

Subject of course

- Introduction

- History of Global Warming & Climate change, global warming research, IPCC – reports, major international agreements, important indicators and problematic issues (e.g. tipping points)

- Energy and carbon chains, energy systems and CO2 emissions

- CO2 factors of energy sources and energy carriers (electricity, district heat)

- Modelling Carbon emissions from energy systems and their reduction (with exercises)

- A comparison of existing online models

- Fundamental approaches to achieve decarbonization

- Carbon footprint and the impact of human behaviour

- How different technologies may contribute to CO2 reduction and what are their costs

- Energy policies for CO2 reduction

- Scenarios of IPCC, IEA & others:  CO2, energy, temperature

Teaching methods

Lecture on the theoretical basics, application of models of climate change and CO2 reduction, presentations in the group, written work in the form of homework.
