Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

- ... carry out simple economic assessments of different renewable energy systems and understand and interprete the results

- ... explain the key characteristics, potentials, challenges, opportunities and future perspectives of renewable energy systems, with a special focus on renewable electricity generation, renewable heating/cooling systems and the specific role of bioenergy

- ... discuss the pros and cons of different energy policy instruments and support schemes for renewable energies

Subject of course

This course provides an overview of future perspectives of renewable energy systems. The course is held in English and is divided into blocks, with each block dedicated to a specific content:

  • Introduction: the energy & climate challenge and basics of economic assessment,
  • Biomass - a key option within all energy sectors
  • Renewable energy technologies for heating and cooling,
  • Renewable energy technologies for electricity generation – potentials and costs,
  • The role of energy policy - support schemes for RE systems,
  • Visions and perspectives of renewable energy systems on a global, European and nation scale

Teaching methods

Lecture, Calculation of exercises, application of a district heating supply dispatch model, discussions
