Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • explain the functioning and components of hydroelectric power generation
  • describe the profit maximizing operation of hydroelectric power stations in electricity markets
  • develop your own source code for simple case studies in GAMS

Subject of course

Fr, 10.11.2023 - Block 1 (Auer): Structure, legal basis and structure of the Austrian electricity industry (historical); New Electricity Industry and Organisation Act (ElWOG) in Austria since 1999 in the course of the implementation of the EU Internal Electricity Market Directive: cornerstones of the ElWOG, market and price development, key energy and structural indicators, green electricity legislation and targets, relevance of emissions trading.

Fr, 17.11.2023 - Block 2 (Pfleger): Overview of electricity markets (Part 1): Spot markets and futures markets, electricity products: definitions and real price developments. - Mathematical optimization: linear, mixed-integer and nonlinear problems. Modeling an extremely simple linear model with GAMS.

Fr, 24.11.2023 - Block 3 (Pfleger): Overview of electricity markets (Part 2): Markets for energy services: products and changes in market structures. Application: Independent development of a linear model. Practicing the content you have already learned.

Fr, 01.12.2023 - Block 4 (Stöcker): Fundamental models for the electricity market: Modelling of an electricity market using linear programming in GAMS. Application: Determination of price forecasts in a simple, exemplary electricity system.

Fr, 15.12.2023 - Block 5 (Rab): Short-term power plant dispatch optimization of a pumped storage power plant: Modeling by means of piecewise linearization and binary variables as a mixed-integer linear problem in GAMS. Application: Determination of a schedule of a pumped storage power plant, taking into account power provision for the provision of balancing energy.

Fr, 12.01.2024 - Block 6 (Rab): Long-term power plant dispatch optimization of a pumped storage power plant: Modeling as a non-linear optimization problem and solution using an iterative algorithm (SLP: Successive Linear Programming) in GAMS. Application: Determination of the optimal storage management of an annual storage facility with associated water values.

Fr, 26.01.2024 - Block 7 - Exam: oral and practical in GAMS, incorporating the elaboration of the exercise examples of the previous blocks

Location of lectures, starting Fr, 10.11.2023: EI 6 (Eckert HS; Gusshausstrasse 25, 4th floor)
