Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply selected methods and approaches on energy system modelling, strategic heat planning and scenario development with a focus on positive energy districts and heating/cooling energy demand and supply. The interactive part of the seminar will focus on the relevance of these methods in the students’ PhD topics.

Subject of course

The course will be split into the following topics:

-          Introduction to Energy Economics in the context of Positive Energy Districts and strategic heat planning

-          Strategic Heat Planning: History, important approaches and methods and exemplary case studies

-          Energy System modelling

-          Scenario design in strategic heat planning – scope, methodologies, challenges, drivers and definition

-          The case of the Hotmaps toolbox: energy mapping, scenario development and strategy design

Teaching methods

Group work, exercises, screening of various software tools for energy system modelling, presentation and discussion
