Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to calculate the operating parameters of overhead lines and asymmetrical operating states in electrical networks. They can also carry out calculations for photovoltaic systems, wind turbines and virtual power plants, as well as the grid control.

After successfully completing the course, students are also able to understand the concept of energy services and electricity markets and to carry out statistical analyzes of electricity prices and generation data from generation units. They can perform profitability and investment calculations as well as calculations of the market value of photovoltaic systems and wind turbines.

Subject of course

Each of the following topics are covered in one or two afternoon sessions:

1. Electrical Systems
    a. Operating parameters of overhead lines and cables
    b. Calculation of imbalanced operating conditions
    c. Photovoltaic plants
    d. Wind power plants
    e. Network control, Virtual power plants

2. Energy Economics
    a. Introduction in energy economics - historical and technological development
    b. The concept of energy services, introduction into cost accounting
    c. Calculating the market value of photovoltaic and wind turbines based on realdata,
        assessment of aninvestmentin PV systems from the perspective of a household, taking into account load profiles.
    d. Introduction to electricity markets
    e. Statistical analysis of electricity prices and generation data


In part 2.c to 2.e the analysis will be done with the software package MATLAB. No previous experience with the software isrequired. A student licensecan be attained from the ZID. All calculations can also be performed with other programs (eg. EXCEL), but the use of MATLAB is recommended.
