Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the most important optical sensors and their physical principles for the detection of biomolecules and to select them for different applications.

 

Subject of course

New optical technologies based on micro- and nanotechnologies are providing the realization of compact and sensitive sensors for the measurement of a wide range of medical parameters.

Physical basics of radiation sources, scattering on particles, wave optics, optical sensors for blood analytics, sensors based on surface plasmon resonance, sensors based on optical waveguides, biosensor microsystems, biosensors based on photonic crystals, sensors based on particle scattering, fluorescence based sensors

Teaching methods

The course is held as a blocked lecture. Students are encouraged to continuously bring their electrotechnical and physical knowledge into the classroom and to cross-link it with the contents of lectures from related fields.
