Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply computational methods in a wide context of neural engineering. Students will have knowledge about the basic function of the nervous system and neuroprostethic devices and will be able to develop models to study the interaction of electric fields and neurons. Attendees will be able to discuss aspects of simulation models and simulation environments and their results qualitatively and quantitatively.

Subject of course

- Basic concepts of single- and multicompartment models
- Neuron models
- Models of extracellular electric stimulation
- Electrophysiology methods, e.g., patch-clamp, microelectrode-array recordings
- Analysis of electrophysiology data, e.g., spike triggered average

Teaching methods

Panel presentation to make students familiar with the field of neural engineering and the mathematical concepts. Exercises will be performed in Python or Matlab and NEURON.

Mode of examination

Written and oral
