Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • practically apply the basics of numerical mathematics for physical models
  • apply stochastic and machine learning methods for numerical calculations
  • develop and apply numerical methods for simulation of material microstructure

Subject of course

The basic principles of numerical mathematics relevant for the electrical engineer are explained: hardware and software for high-performance numerics, solving linear and nonlinear, real algebraic equations, solving systems of ordinary and partial differential equation systems, finite difference method, and finite element method.

The in-depth part deals with the mathematical models and numerical methods for simulating microstructures in metals and semiconductors: Markov and semi-Markov processes, stochastic differential equations, Monte-Carlo Potts algorithm and Cahn-Hilliard equation.

In the exercise, students are given the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge to solve specific tasks, either as a Python/C ++ program or as a model implemented in an existing software.
