Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the basic operation principles of the most common THz devices, students gain in-depth understanding of a particular type of devices and learn, how to analyse and work with the scientific papers, how to put them into context in a particular research field. Students will also improve their presentation skills.

Subject of course

The course consists of 3 blocks:

1st block:

  • The students will be offered several chapters from a book on semiconductor THz technology. The chapters give an overview on most common THz devices and systems and their operation principles.
  • The contents of the chapters will be subsequently discussed with the supervisor. Open questions and details will be clarified.

2nd block:

  • The students will be offered one or two scientific review articles for reading. The article(s) will give in-depth overview of a particular type of THz devices. In particular, that could be reviews on THz resonant tunnelling diodes (RTDs), THz photoconductive (photomixers) devices/systems, etc.
  • The contents of the review articles will be subsequently discussed with the supervisor. Open questions and details will be clarified.

3rd block:

  • The students will be offered a scientific article for the analysis.
  • The contents of the article will be subsequently discussed with the supervisor. Open questions and details will be clarified.
  • The student prepares a short presentation describing the contents and the main points of the article, the presentation will be given at the research-group seminar.

The contents of the 2nd and 3rd blocks of the course could be adjusted to the preferences and interests of the student.
