Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to name and describe the key components of an electronic-photonic integrated system and the possible applications for such systems. For simple case examples the students are able to choose suitable technological approaches. Moreover, students are able to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of different technological approaches applied to simple case examples.

Subject of course

After an introduction, the fundamentals of electronic integration will be recapitulated. Additionally, we will discuss the fundamentals of photonic integration, including passive (e.g. waveguides) and active components (e.g. micro-ring resonators, modulators, …). After that, we will talk about the integration of photonic ICs with electronic ICs. Additionally there is a strong focus on possible actual and future applications, such as systems for optical networks, classical detectors and quantum sensing, quantum cryptography, optical quantum simulators, and key components for optical quantum computers).

Teaching methods

After the presentation of the key components of electronic-photonic integrated systems, case examples for the application of this technology in current and potential future applications are discussed.
