  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to conduct basic biosignal analysis with the help of Matlab. They are able to design digital signal filters, detect events in the time domain using automated Matlab scripts, and carry out analyzes in the frequency domain. They also have a basic theoretical understanding of the physiological origin of biosignals and their digitization.

Subject of course

The course incorporates lectures, exercises and specific project works. The aim is to present analytical methods for biosignal processing with emphasis on the electrocardiogram and arterial pressure waves. In addition to measuring procedures, methods of signal analysis will be introduced. The focus will be laid on the implementation in Matlab. The possibilities of Matlab to apply these methods will be presented. In hands-on lessons, the gained knowledge will be turned into practice. The expertise will be strengthened in praxis-related projects.

Teaching methods

This course will combine lectures, hands-on lessons and project works.

Lecture: Presentations by the lecturers of this course will be given.

Hands-on lessons: Students will get programming tasks to be carried out on site. Lecturers will be available at the lecture hall to give hints and a helping hand if needed. Please have your laptop (with Matlab) ready.

Project: Students will get programming tasks to be carried out elsewhere and independently. The last (third) project also includes a final presentation in front of the class.

Questions & Answers: Students will have the chance to ask questions on their specific project works. Lecturers will be present at the lecture hall.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

This course will combine lectures, hands-on lessons and project works. As a prerequisite for a positive grade, all three project works have to be submitted, via TUWEL, Project2 and Project3 have to be discussed with a lecturer and a final presentation has to be given.

The course is structured in these types:

LE: Lecture
Presentations by the lecturers of this course will be given.

HO: Hands-on lesson
Students will get programming tasks to be carried out on site. Lecturers will be available at the lecture hall to give hints and a helping hand if needed. Please have your laptop (with Matlab) ready.

PR: Project
Students will get programming tasks to be carried out elsewhere and independently. The last project, Project3, also includes a final presentation in front of the class.

QA: Questions & Answers
Students will have the chance to ask questions on their specific project works. Lecturers will be present at the lecture hall. We encourage you to work on your projects during the Q&A lessons.

Examination modalities

For grading, the results of three project works will be weighted in the following manner:

Project1: 20% (Program code)

Project2: 30% (Program code, Report, Discussion)

Project3: 50% (Program code, Report, Discussion, Presentation)

At the end of this course, everyone will discuss Project2 and Project3 with one of the lecturers and will give a short presentation of Project3.

Projects 1 and 2 are individual projects, project 3 will be done in groups of 2.
