Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • distinguish Information Systems, Production Information Management Systems (PIMS), Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) and their interrelations
  • name, distinguish and explain PIMS architecture
  • give examples of, apply and assess Requirements Engineering of PIMS for CPPS
  • apply Business Process Management and modelling language (BPMN)
  • describe and explain Process Mining methods
  • discuss potentials of Cloud Services
  • describe and define PIMS architecture for a specific CPPS use-case
  • apply Requirements Engineering of PIMS for a CPPS use-case
  • differentiate and formulate stakeholder and system requirements
  • design and model a concept for PIMS

The ultimate goal is to develop advanced competences in information systems design as a prerequisite for cyber-physical production systems.

Subject of course

    • Importance of Data and Information in Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS)
    • Information Systems (IS)
    • Production Information Management Systems (PIMS)
    • Types of PIMS and the automation pyramid
    • Reference architectures of PIMS
    • Requirements Engineering
    • Requirements specification for PIMS in natural language and modelling languages (BPMN)
    • Business process management and process mining
    • Cloud services for PIMS
    • Case studies for PIMS
    • Design and modelling of use-case(s)

Teaching methods

Flipped Classroom method

  • Self-paced learning by means of assignments, e.g., watch lecture videos or prepare assignments - all mandatory
  • Flipped Classroom Sessions for clarification (Q&A, discussions), short group exercises - mandatory participation

Exercise Assignment carried out in an independent group work on a case study

  • ÖBB presents a simplified use case of train maintenance operation
  • Groups prepare and submit assignment

Mode of examination

Written and oral
