Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • describe basic concepts of the formal and informal organization with subject-specific terminology,
  • put different theoretical concepts (e.g. contingency theory, principal-agent theory) into concrete practical examples,
  • analyze the practical problems of organizing and derive, evaluate theory-driven solutions for case studies,
  • critically evaluate the organizational topic from a management perspective.

Subject of course

The Course will entail the following topics:

  • Basics of the division of labour and process management
  • Organizational design and structures
  • Contingency theory and outside influences
  • Informal processes and organizational culture
  • Organizational change and learning
  • Inter-organizational cooperation and corporate ethic

Teaching methods

  • Introduction in different theoretical concepts in Organization
  • Discussion about case studies
  • Written reflection via "Thought paper"

The structure of this course is inspired by the so-called 'flipped classroom' concept: instead of a weekly lecture, the students work in groups on weekly exercises. Every two weeks there is a Zoom Meeting to discuss and/or give feedback on the exercises and to answer questions.
