Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • the students understand the procedure for the project-oriented optimization of products and processes with the help of Six Sigma. They are also familiar with the necessary framework conditions for improvement work (e.g. procedure for selecting, commissioning and handling improvement projects, necessary organizational structures, qualification of employees, perception of the role of managers).
  • Students can select quality methods and tools according to their needs and apply them fundamentally. These are in particular the following methods and tools: Graphical analysis tools (time course, histogram, scatter diagram, Pareto diagram, error collection map, etc.), cause and effect analysis, process capability, statistical process control, analysis of measurement systems, correlation and regression, test procedures, statistical test methodology, error possibility and influence analysis, Poka Yoke.
  • Students understand the interaction of quality methods and tools in business practice as well as in improvement projects.
  • the students know the role and benefits of project-oriented improvement in the company.

Teaching methods

The contents are conveyed in the form of a coordinated combination of presence units and self-study:

  • First presence unit: Presentation of the contents and the organisational handling of the course, presentation and discussion of selected contents, presentation and discussion of practical examples.
  • Self-study students develop selected content with the help of a TUWEL course. This includes films in which the contents are explained, examples of exercises and multiple-choice tests to monitor learning success.
  • Second and third presence units: discussion of questions that have arisen in the context of self-study, practice-oriented discussion of selected methods and tools, joint processing of exercise examples (in particular ability of processes, statistical process control, test procedures, statistical test methodology).

Additional information

The exercise requires a PC or laptop (using the Minitab statistics software), as the use of the software is explained in the UE. Groups of two people are formed who should have a laptop or PC at their disposal.

Examination modalities

The proof of achievement is provided by a written examination in the form of an MC test (60%) and by the preparation of a protocol on selected topics of the course (40%). Both parts must be completed positively.

In order to take part in an examination, it is necessary to register in time (for the respective examination date) in TISS. Students who do not meet the registration deadline cannot take part in the exam! Enquiries in this regard will not be answered!

Examination Barriers

In accordance with the study regulations (Mitteilungsblatt 2014, 3. Stück; Nr.22), the following rules apply to the cancellation of examinations.

§ 18a. (1)) The students are entitled to cancel their examinations orally, in writing or electronically with the examiner or dean of studies at the latest two working days before the day of the examination.

(2) If students do not appear for an examination without having cancelled their registration in accordance with paragraph 1, the Dean of Studies is entitled to exclude these students from the registration for this examination for a period of eight weeks at the suggestion of the examiner. This period begins on the examination day on which the student, despite having registered correctly, did not appear without having cancelled his/her registration beforehand. The affected students must be informed of the suspension in an appropriate manner.

(3) If the student can prove that he/she has been prevented from deregistering in due time in accordance with paragraph 1 by a valid reason (e.g. accident) or another reason worthy of special consideration, the suspension must be lifted.

It should be noted that use is made of the option set out in paragraph (2) for students who do not appear at the examination without prior deregistration.
