Aim of course

The "Organization laboratory" addresses the issue of organization in an experimental way. Learning about organization comes through organizing, through developing, monitoring and changing the organization the OLab in itself is. The organizations we know are generally structured in two ways ¿ horizontally (split of work) and vertically (hierarchic ranks). This official structure is not identical with the informal structure. The dynamics of an organization is determined by the interaction of both, which is sometimes supportive, sometimes opposing, rarely neutral. The informal structure consists of a network of tighter and looser emotional bonds between individuals, creating a number of major and minor groupings in any given population. With the help of specific methods in the Olab the interaction of emerging structures and deliberately taken actions can be studied. Especially the decision making system, namely those meta-decisions that affect the decision-making mode itself, can be studied. It is advantageous to have already completed courses that deal with social processes (eg. the group dynamic training group). Methodology: Experimental learning, evaluation of the ongoing process, establishment of self-monitoring and self-control.

Subject of course

The Olab provides a learning arrangement in which organization is as well produced as reflected in its processes. It is less about the dynamics within manageable sub-groups, also not primarily about so-called large-group processes, but the dynamics between groups, the development of cross-group cooperation and the possibilities and difficulties of controlling large social organizations. Contents and procedural issues of the Olab are the handling of hierarchy or necessary hierarchization, the wishes (and their frustration) to be led on the one side, and the wishes (and their frustration) for inclusion and participation on the other, the resulting conflicts over the question of power in general and the possibilities to influence specific decisions. Topics: (Joint) decision making, representation, delegation, power, control, cultures and subcultures, integration of subgroups, comparison of Olab-experiences and other organizational experiences, management, hierarchy and hierarchy crisis.
