Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • interpret and apply definitions, terms and basic rules for pressure equipment (pressure vessels, piping, armatures, and pressure bearing assemblies).
  • assigning important regulation for placing on the market and operation of pressure equipment in Austria, the European Union, and global; applying concepts and terms from these regulations, and becoming acquainted to similar regulation quickly;
  • interpret and apply requirements  to materials, design, manufacture, accessories, testing and examination (pre- and in-service inspections) of pressure vessels.
  • describe structure and features of important elements of pressure vessels and plants, with the further goal to select such elements and operate plants.
  • describe and interpret important documents (especially drawings) in plant design.

Subject of course

  • Documents and design drawings in plant design
  • Pressure equipment: Pressure Equipment Directive (Richtlinie 2014/68/EU) and other Legal requirements as well as rules of technology,, materials, manufacturing, testing und in-service inspection, design calculations
  • Special design details: Plating, lining, multi-layer design, design to avoid or minimize corrosion, heat insulation, connectors and leak-tightness, sight glasses
  • Piping: Piping parts and welded connections, compensation of thermal strain and expansion joints, supports, insulation and heating, venting, drainage, piping design documents
  • Accessories: Blocking- and adjustment valves, accessory against overpressure, non-return valves, steam traps, drainage and venting valves, pressure-reducing valves
  • Special equipment: Heat exchangers

Teaching methods

To achieve the teaching objectives, weekly teaching units are held in the lecture theatre and a TUWEL course is made available.

Between the teaching units, students work on the content using the documents in the TUWEL course (lecture notes, videos, etc.) and carry out the e-learning activities (tests) provided for assessment. The e-learning activities are always activated until the start of the teaching unit in which the relevant content is repeated.

The learning objectives are then assessed in the form of a final written test at the end of the course. The teaching units in the lecture theatre will be transmitted online and recorded (as long as there are no technical problems and recordings are available via TUWEL).

Examination modalities

The partial assessments to be completed are the e-learning part, which consists of the weekly e-learning activities (tests), and the final written test at the end of the course.

The e-learning part is passed if the sum of the points across all activities exceeds 50% of the achievable points. All e-learning activities (tests) will be activated again for approx. 2 weeks at the end of the course to allow students to improve or to make up individual tests.

It is only possible to take the final written test after passing the e-learning part. The final test is considered passed if at least 50% of the achievable points have been achieved. Final tests are offered at the end of the course (after the Christmas holidays), at the end of the semester break and in the middle and at the end of the following summer semester. Any of the dates can be chosen for the examination, and in the event of a negative result, any of the subsequent dates (if available) can be used for a retake.

Students must bring their student ID card, a calculator, writing materials and the appendices to the lecture notes (in written form), which may be used as examination documents, to the final examination. No notes are permitted in the examination documents.

To successfully complete the course, both the e-learning activities (tests) and the final written test must be passed. For the grade, the e-learning activities are weighted at 25% and the final written test at 75%.

Attendance at the teaching units in the lecture theatre is strongly recommended, but is not a requirement.

If the e-learning part has been completed successfully and no final test has been taken, the e-learning part can be credited in the next academic year.
