Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • independently conduct measurements for the identification of the system behaviour,
  • identify suitable modelling strategies and apply them to a physical system,
  • suggest appropriate control algorithms and implements them in a given hardware,
  • critically evaluate their results and suggest improvements.

Subject of course

The course offers the opportunity to combine skills from different courses and apply them to a practical task, thermby deepening the understanding of the underlying theoretical fundametals.

Students work in groups to complete a given task, e.g. active sound absorption using a piezoelectrially actuated panel.

Teaching methods

The laboratory is organized as a project work carried out largely independently by the students in small groups.

The task is handed out in a kick-off meeting, and an introductory lecture is offered. During the semester, the results of the work are presented and discussed in 3 consecutive workshops (model building, model validation, control).

The necessary previous knowledge from system dynamics, vibration engineering, modal analysis, FE-methods and control engineering is applied practically in this laboratory work. The associated challenges (realistic model creation, adaptation and controller design for it, handling of measurement and real-time control hardware and software) are solved and thus significant practical experience is gained.
