Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • apply and explain the theoretical principles of MBS by means of examples considering the derivation of the equations of motion as well as the implementation into software packages.
  • derive proper models and to interpret the results and to make them plausible, as well as to document them.

Subject of course

Introduction to the application of MBS software package SIMPACK for the automated generation of the equations of motion of multi-body systems, as well as their numerical integration and visual preparation of respective results. Particular focus is put on the selection of a proper model as well as the interpretation of the results and to make them plausible.

Teaching methods

Introduction to the software package SIMPACK; Derivation of model topologies; Application of MBS-approaches from related VO; derivation of the equations of motion of the model; Implementation of the equations of motion into numerical software; Discussion of the modelling, implementation and derived results;

Mode of examination

Written and oral

Additional information

The number of participants is limited to 40 students. The selection process is as follows: The mean mark of lectures VO Mechanik 1 and UE Mechanik 1 as well as VO Mechanik 2 and UE Mechanik 2, weighted by respective ECTS, is calculated. Students with best weighted mean mark will be permit to participate.

Organisation of the lecture:

  1. First, a lecture to introduce SIMPACK is given
  2. Some day after this lecture, a test on basic knowledge of SIMPACK has to be passed. After passing the test, an exercise will be provided to be solved individually.
  3. During the semester a mid term lecture is given, where progress of the work is checked and questions answered.
  4. At the end of the semester, the exercise has to be presented at the computer and a protocol has to be provided.

The lecture will be supported TUWEL, where more detailed and current informations are provided.
