Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently solve fundamental numerical problems that are relevant in many areas of mechanical engineering. In particular, this includes numerical differentiation and integration, as well as theoretical considerations and practical methods to solving boundary and initial value problems. The students will learn both the theory and how to use the numerical methods in practice both “by hand” and coding their own computer programs. Another learning objective is to be able to discern the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods and their limits in terms of applicability.

Subject of course

Numerical differentiation

Numerical integration

Initial value problems

Boundary value problems

Teaching methods

All lectures are interactive. Theoretical explanations are accompanied by practical examples. In the exercise part of the course, a deeper knowledge of the theory is acquired by solving practical exercises and the students are supported by suitable activities, e.g.  homework, assignments, etc.
