Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

1.) to define the basic thermodynamic terms such as temperature, chemical potential, heat, enthalpy, chemical composition.
2.) to formulate the equilibrium conditions between thermodynamic systems.
3.) set up balance sheet equations for energy, mss, and chemical components.
4.) to clarify the different heat transfer mechanisms.
5.) to explain the different types of mass transfer and to illustrate the analogy with heat transfer.
6.) apply Fourie's heat transfer law.
7.) to explain the different types of definition of the diffusing current of a chemical component.
8.) to calculate the diffusion current using Fick's law.
9.) to convert between the different types of diffusion flows.
10.) apply the dimension analysis to heat and mass transfer problems.
11.) to explain and calculate the heat transfer and energy transport in a shear flow, taking into account the dissipation.
12.) describe the heat transfer to laminar pipe flow.
13.) specify the speed and temperature profile in a non-resolved shear flow at high Reynolds number near the wall.
14.) to define the terms "wall shear stress" "viscous sub-layer" of a turbulent shear flow.
15.) describe and calculate the qualitative behavior of flow and energy transport in laminar or turbulent shear flows in wall boundary layers.
16.) to explain the mechanism of free convection currents and to calculate the heat and mass transfer free convection currents.
17.) to know the radiation laws (Stefan-Boltzmann's, Wien's, Planck's Kirchhoff's radiation law) and to apply to heat transfer problems.
18.) to know, calculate, and interpret the dimensionless groups of heat and mass transfer.
19.) to solve the examples in the exercise collection.
20.) to answer the questions in the question catalouge correctly.

Subject of course

Heat transfer by conduction, diffusive mass transfer, heat and mass transfer for basic flows (Couette flow, pipe flow, boundary-layer flows for forced and natural convection), heat transfer by radiation

Examination modalities

There will be 2 online tests (15 points per test) + 2 homeworks (10 points per homework) and a final oral exam. Thus, the 50 points is the maximum. The minimum to get a positive grade is to collect a minimum of 15 points on the tests and 10 points on the homeworks. In Feb. there will be another test that will replace the test with the poorer result.
