Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to either program (for example in Matlab) simple examples of numerical fluid mechanics or to handle commercial application software (e.g. Fluent).

Students independently develop technological solutions for practice-relevant flow problems utilizing analytical approaches and numerical simulation.

The lecture is part of the Applied Fluid Mechanics Module consisting of an in interlinked lecture (VO), a CFD project (PR) and a laboratory exercise (LU).

Subject of course

Application of practical flow simulation software, numerical and theoretical treatment of typical applied problems from modeling to problem solving.

The project contains selected applications from the following fields:

  • One Directional Flow Phenomena
  • Heat & Fluid Flow Applications
  • Elements of Fluid Flow Instabilities
  • Elements of Aerodynamics

Teaching methods

Solving model-coupled ordinary differential equations with Matlab; solving applied fluid mechanics problems with the Navier Stokes Solver ANSYS Fluent.

Examination modalities

A summary of the numerical and analytical analysis of selected problems in the field of applied fluid mechanics will be collected in protocols and submitted. This includes a concise description of the problems, the chosen numerical procedure and a discussion including comparison to experimental observations (which are provided in the laboratory exercise).

The marks are based on the knowledge of the subject, on active participation and cooperation during the project and the submitted protocols.
