Aim of course

Engineering students will gain a deeper and more thorough grounding in principles and fundamental applications on compressible fluid mechanics and aerodynamics

Subject of course

Gas dynamics: Introductory concepts, fundamental definitions and equations, speed of sound, Mach number, thermodynamics; Steady isoentropic flow, choked flow, subsonic and supersonic nozzles; De-Laval nozzle, Hugoniot equations; Flow with friction, Fanno line; Flow with heat addition, Rayleigh line; Shock waves, conservation relations, normal and oblique shocks. Aerodynamics: external flows, aerodynamic forces and moments; skin friction, pressure drag and lift;  incompressible flow around an airfoil;  NACA airfoils; modern low-speed NASA airfoils; Finite wings; Linear theory for subsonic and supersonic compressible flow over an airfoil;  elements of hypersonic flow. All themes will be illustrated via examples and exercises.

Structure of the exam:
-) The exam consists of 2/3 problems
-) Each problem is divided into parts (2 or 3, typically).
A score is associated to each part (the maximum cumulative score considered to calculate the final grade is 100).
Each problem should be solved by applying the correct equations and by providing the required results.

Grades will be assigned as follows:

51-65 -> (pass)      4
66-73 -> (pass)      3
74-85 -> (pass)      2
>85 -> (pass)         1

NOTE: Depending on the overall behavior of the class, the score ranges given above might change and shift towards lower values.
