Theoretical concepts to understand and model turbulent flows are presented and explained. The specific forms of turbulence occurring in the most important flows in engineering are scrutinised. Amonghst others, the students are trained to get to the bottom of turbulence closures commonly adopted in modern computational fluid dynamics applied to engineering problems.
Governing equations for mass/momentum/energy transport, brief introduction in laminar-turbulent transition, statistical description of turbulent flows, scales in turbulent flows, mean-flow equations, shear flows (pipe and channel flows, attached boundary layers, free shear layers).
