Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • understand the advanced concepts of fluid mechanics and combine this specific knowledge with other areas of engineering (for example physics, mechanics and thermodynamics);
  • understand specific physical-mathematical considerations that are necessary to model problems in fluid mechanics;
  • understand and solve basic tasks in the process industry and / or the environment;
  • apply mathematical models of fluid mechanics and solve fluid mechanics tasks independently

Subject of course

Exercises and applications on:

  • Lecture 1 - Adimensionalization
  • Lecture 2 - Creeping Flow
  • Lecture 3 - Lubrication theory I
  • Lecture 4 - Lubrication theory II
  • Lecture 5 - Application of Lubrication theory
  • Lecture 6 - Potential flow
  • Lecture 6 - Potential flow and drag on slender body
  • Lecture 7 - D' Alembert paradox
  • Lecture 8 - Boundary layer: theory and Stokes problem
  • Lecture 9 - Boundary layer: flat plate, Blasius solution, separation and classification
  • Lecture 10 - Turbulence phenomena and modelling
  • Lecture 11 - Modelling of the Reynolds stresses
  • Lecture 12 - Law of the wall (Turbulent flow in a pipe)
  • Lecture 13 – Summary exercises

Teaching methods

The following didactic aids are used to support the students in achieving the learning objectives:
• Calculate case studies on the board.
• Homework to be done independently by the students (within a given time window, typically one week); Subsequent discussion of the solution and the results.

Mode of examination

Examination modalities

Students have to write an intermediate and a final test (with the possibility of writing also a replacement test) to assess whether they have achieved the expected knowledge and preparation.

Tests Administration

Three exams will be scheduled, of which the student must take at least two:
• Midterm test: covers the first part of the course program;
• Final test: covers the second part of the course program;
• “Replacement test” (Nachtest): covers the entire course program and is held after the Final test.
Exam duration: 1h30min.
All exams are written tests. Each test comprises two or more problems. Each problem comprises two or more questions. The maximum test score is 100, and it is the sum of all the sub-scores of each question.
To get a positive grade, each student must:
• Attend at least 11 UE lectures even if no exercises have been completed;
• Complete at least 50% of all the exercises assigned in the homework;
• Take at least two tests of which the combined score is at least 100 points;
• Score at least 25 points on two tests.
If one of these points is not met, a negative certificate will be issued.
IMPORTANT: Tutors have the option to check the student’s homework at every UE lecture. An exercise marked as complete in TUWEL, but verified as ‘NOT DONE’ by the tutor renders the entire homework for that week not done.

Grades
The final grade will be assigned considering the sum of the scores of the two exams taken (ranging from 0 to 200) will be assigned according to the following table:
SCORE                GRADE
<100      -> (fail)            5
100-130 -> (pass)      4
131-147 -> (pass)      3
148-170 -> (pass)      2

>=171    -> (pass)           1
