Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: LU Laboratory Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to measure the viscosities of fluids, apply Laser-Doppler anemometry and hot wire anemometry to measure velocities, make flows visible either with the Schlieren-method or on model flows such as the Hele-Shaw cell and the shallow water channel, explain the observed phenomena, and measure the drag and lift of an airfoil profile.

Subject of course

Units of 4 hours each on the following topics: (i) viscosimetry, (ii) classical optical measurement methods, free convection, compressible flow; shallow water channel, (iii) instabilities: Taylor-Couette-flow, (iv) icing of a wing profile in the subsonic wind tunnel (hot wire anemometry, 6-component force balance), (v) Particle Image Velocimetry or Laser Doppler Anemometry, (vi) diffusion and fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell.

Teaching methods

Experiments and operation of measurement devices.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Examination modalities

At the beginning of each exercise unit the knowledge of the respective documents (lecture notes) is checked.

Protocols are written, which are to be handed in at the end of the exercise unit, but at the latest by the next exercise unit.

The marks are based on the knowledge of the lab contents, on active participation, cooperation and on the submitted reports.

The laboratory of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer is located at Arsenal, Franz-Grill-Straße 9, Object 214.
