Application of concepts machine design, structural mechanics and materials science to the design and assessment of light weight structures.
Achieving an improved understanding of the subject material of the lectures, exercises in mathematical methods for designing light weight structures.
Basics of light weight structures, materials for light weight structures and their properties (especially composite materials and compounds), methods of stress analysis and stability analysis of light weight structures; beams, trusses, shells, sandwich structures; plasticity, fracture mechanics, design of lightweight structures. The methods and approaches are applied to problems.
In order to correlate the lecture and tutorial parts the course units are given in a partially blocked way, see course events. In addition two refresher course units "Grundlagenauffrischung Teil1 & 2" in which the required lightweight foundations are discussed, are offered at the beginning of the semester. The course notes for lectures and tutorials can be downloaded in TISS (only for personal use!) in the end of September..
The course is graded on the basis of three written exams ("colloquia")during the semester and a final oral exam.
Students who have successfully passed the first and second colloquium are admitted to the oral exam. Students who have not passed these two colloquia can take a third written exam, the best 2 results from the 3 colloquia being used. The written part of the examination is positive if at least 10 points were obtained from 2 colloquia, the maximum achievable being 20 points.
After a successful oral exam, the final grade of Lightweight Structures VU is determined.
Registration in TISS for the colloquia and for the oral examination (mode: oral) is required. If you do not not attend the exam and failed to deregister (at least two days before the test), you will be banned for the next 8 weeks!
During the written examination lecture notes, exercise transcripts, printed course notes and literature can be used. If other documents are used, references must be given in the written tests.
Calculators are allowed, but the use of the Internet as well as of cell phones, smartphones, tablets and laptops are prohibited during the test!
