Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe and explain nano- and ultrastructure of selected biological tissues and tissue components,
  • describe nanomechanics of unstructured biological tissue components (entropic elasticity),
  • categorise nanomechanics of structured biological tissue components (collagen structure, self-assembly and mechanics),
  • explain the terms morphology, physiology and mechanical properties of bone, ligaments, tendons and cartilage, to list linear continuum mechanics applied to hard biological tissues
  • summarise basic nonlinear continuum mechanics applied to soft biological tissues

Subject of course

  • Nano- and ultrastructure of biological tissues and tissue components
  • Nanomechanics of unstructured biological tissue components: entropic elasticity
  • Nanomechanics of structured biological tissue components: collagen structure, self-assembly and mechanics
  • Description of the morphology, physiology and mechanical properties of bone, ligaments and tendons as well as cartilage
  • Short review of vector and tensor algebra
  • Linear continuum mechanics of hard tissues
  • Introduction to nonlinear continuum mechanics soft and fluid-saturated biological tissues
