Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe and explain:    

- Nano- and ultrastructure of selected biological tissues and tissue components

- Nanomechanics of unstructured biological tissue components: entropic elasticity

- Nanomechanics of structured biological tissue components: collagen structure, self-assembly and mechanics

- The morphology, physiology and mechanical properties of bone, ligaments, tendons and cartilage

- Linear continuum mechanics applied to hard biological tissues

- Basic nonlinear continuum mechanics applied to soft biological tissues

Description of the morphology, physiology and mechanical properties of bone, ligaments and tendons as well as cartilage. 

Short review of vector and tensor algebra.

Linear continuum mechanics of hard tissues.

Introduction to nonlinear continuum mechanics soft and fluid-saturated biological tissues.
