Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • give an overview of current and future space propulsion systems
  • make basic calculations regarding propulsion capabilities
  • explain the limits of application for different space propulsion concepts

  • Chemical Propulsion: Overview, Nozzle Design, Alternative Propellants, Reuseable Launch Vehicles
  • Launch Assist Technologies: Reduction of Required Acceleration, Advanced Drag Reduction, Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion
  • Nuclear Propulsion: Overview, Fission Propulsion, Fusion Propulsion, Radioisotope Rockets, Antimatter Propulsion Electric Propulsion: Electrothermal, Electrostatic, Electromagnetic-Propulsion, Induced Spacecraft Interactions
  • Micropropulsion: Chemical and Electric Propulsion Propellantless Propulsion: Tether, Photon Rocket, Laserpropulsion, Solar Sail, Magnetic Sail
  • Breakthrough Propulsion: Present Borders of Space Propulsion, New Physics to Control Gravitation, When will there be a revolution in Space Travel?
