Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: VO Lecture

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • understand the essential features and functions of an off-highway utility vehicle and its main assemblies (frame, powertrain, axles, lock management, suspension systems) and their various applications (e.g. construction site, tractor, military, racing).
  • describe the differences to the conventional commercial vehicle.
  • give an overview of the fundamentals of terramechanics and a discuss the characteristics of various terrain types.

Subject of course

Prerequisite for participation in the lecture is the successful examination or at least the participation in the lecture "Commercial- and special vehicle Technology". During the lecture base knowledge about terramechanic principles are provided. Design criteria of offroad commercial and special vehicles are discussed in detail. Some exemplary implementations of offroad-vehicles in different areas of operation, e.g. offroad trucks, agricultural tractors, construction equipment, military vehicles and race trucks, will be discussed. Finally, an excursion to an offroad vehicle manufacturer with practical demonstration will take place.

Teaching methods

As part of the block lecture, the assemblies will discussed in an interactive dialogue between the students and the teacher on the basis of an illustrated script. Typical examples of the different uses e.g. construction sites, agriculture, military wheeled and tracked vehicles as well as rally trucks are being discussed in detail and made understandable with videos. Following the course, a complete script will be distributed to the participants in the lecture and an excursion to a leading military vehicle manufacturer in Vienna will be offered in order to put the teaching content into practice.
