Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • pass on their knowledge of alternative energy systems to third parties
  • characterise energy sources and fuels based on the basis of their starting products, manufacturing processes and properties
  • design storage systems for energy sources (chemical, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical and thermal energy storage)
  • use energy converters (chemical, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, hydraulic and thermal energy converters as well as a combination of these) consequently
  • evaluate vehicles with alternative drive systems (flex-fuel, natural gas, hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles)

Subject of course

A basic overview of the area of alternative powertrains for automotive is given.

Content:

  1.  Motivation and target
  2.  Introduction
  3.  Energy carrier / fuels
  4.  Energy storage systems
  5.  Energy converter
  6.  Vehicles with alternative powertrains

Teaching methods

This lecture is intended to provide an overview of the various possible applications of primary energy for the propulsion of motor vehicles, the respective advantages and disadvantages of these variants and an insight into current and future alternative propulsion systems.
