The lecture aims to give the students a practical view to the challenges and solutions of modern Diesel engine technology. Aspects of market requirements and cost considerations are an essential part of the lecture. A majority of the charts will be shown in English in order to simultaneously achieve a training using the world-wide language in this field.
Beside general requirements and tendencies in Diesel engine technology, the areas of combustion systems, fuel injection technologies as well as air management are considered with a special view also to turbocharging and 4-valve technology. Additional focuses are directed to engine mechanics, especially piston design and development. A further focus is laid on exhaust emissions, the existing and future legal standards are discussed in detail, accompained with practical technical solutions.
The course is directed to students who are interested in engine design of development, in particular Diesel engines. The course, hold in a kind of Seminar style, assumes the attendence of related basic lectures, among others automotive prime moves, thermodynamics and turbo machines. The course is supported by power point presentations. In SS 2014 and again in 2017 the script (collection of charts) has been updated and refined for the usage. The lecture is held since 1985, has been updated regularly, and it counts to the best attended of its kind with 30 students on average. The lecture is seen as a valuable contribution to the lecture programm of the Institute of Powertrains and Automotive Technology.
The course is hold in a 2 days block. The dialog with the lecturers is very much appreciated enhencing situative deepening of individual questions.
