Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • understand the motor vehicle (KFZ) as a system based on the legal definition.
  • describe the main components of motor vehicles in their functions and in their conception and execution.
  • give a historical overview of the development of the automobile.
  • to give an overview of the following subjects: structure, safety, tires, chassis, steering, transmission and basic concepts of vehicle dynamics.

Subject of course

After a historical review the physics and dynamcs and furthermore the main modules of a vehicle will be treated. Finally the safety of a vehicle for users will be covered in detail. Main modules are suspension systems, steering, braking systems, clutches and gear systems (including automatc and double clutch gear concepts).

The contents of the lecture are arranged as follows:

1. Introduction

2. Driving mechanics

3. Vehicle assemblies

4. Safety in motor vehicles

Teaching methods

It is primarily a classical lecture with the support of PowerPoint slides and a script as well as various videos and animations. In addition, typical vehicle components are brought to the lecture in hardware.

Examination modalities

PLEASE NOTE: All exams at our institute are to be taken in GERMAN!

Exams to this course take place (in writing) at the institute's monthly exam dates! 

If you are between the grades 1 and 2 or 4 and 5 after the written exam, there is the possibility of an additional oral exam, on the 2nd Friday following the exam at 10 a.m.

As all our written exams take place in parallel, registration for only one exam is permitted per exam date! Multiple registrations will not be tolerated! Failure to turn up to an exam to which the student has registered will result in an 8-week ban on the exam (in accordance with section 18a of the Statute on Study Law)! De-registrations after the registration deadline will not be considered!
