This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2019S, VO, 1.0h, 1.5EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.0
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: VO Lecture

Aim of course

The described lecture gives an overview on the actual development trends and delivers an outlook on the future of the spark ignition engine. The student will receive informations on the working principle of the various measures for improvement and their interactions. With this knowledge he will be in the position to plan future improvements for spark ignition engines with regard to the target definitions of a specific project.

Subject of course

  1. Boundary conditions for future developments - Legal requirements - Customer requirements
  2. Reduction of fuel consumption - Thermodynamics (e.g. gasoline direct injection, variable valve train systems, charge dilution, ...) - Reduction of engine parasitic losses - Downsizing, shifting the engine's operation to higher loads
  3. Alternative fuels
  4. Improvement of full load performance - Improved volumetric efficiency for natural aspirated engines - Charging
  5. Reduction of exhaust emissions - engine internal measures - exhaust gas aftertreatment
  6. Improved engine architecture - Mass reduction - Cost reduction - Improved engine comfort
  7. Current implementations of technologies in spark ignition engines
  8. Development trends for the future
