Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand applications of lasers in manufacturing, systems for laser beam guidance, laser beam shaping and optical systems for laser material processing.

Subject of course

1. Applications of lasers in manufacturing. Construction of a station for laser material processing. Systems for laser beam guidance. Basic arrangements of the beam transmission. Beam splitting. Overview of typical handling systems.

2. Laser beam shaping. Arrangements for beam shaping. Beam expansion. Beam focusing. Intensity and intensity distribution. Shaping the intensity distribution. Moving mirrors. Beam superposition.

3. Optical systems for beam shaping. Selection of the optimal lens. Lens types. Collection and dispersion lenses. Aberrations. Aspherical lens. Optical fibers. Lens systems. Telescope lenses and focus translators. F-Theta lenses. Mirror. Laser scanning systems.

4. Transmittance curves of selected optical materials. Laser optics. Coated laser optics. Uncoated substrates. Waveplates. High Power Polarizers. IR laser optics. CO₂ laser optics for cutting, engraving and marking. Phase-shifting mirror. Diffractive elements. Aspherical beam shaper.

5. Micro-optics. Microlens arrays. Beam transformation systems. Diffusers / Homogenizer. Micro-optics for a collimation of diode laser arrays.
