1. To prove the significance of the application of the fundamentals of approppriate technology (theory and methodology) in the professional praxis of TU-Wien engineers. 2. The purpose of the exercise (übung), executed as a group activity, is to test the application of the theory of appropriate technology in a real situation/ /project. 3. The report about the exercise serves as group examination. The course can be reported and followed in german or in english.
Ad 1. Theory and methodology will be explained based on publications in the field, specifically the books "Technology for liberation" and "The proof of the pudding" (theory) and "Appropriate technology for developing countries and - in industrialised countries"(practice) as well as other selected publications of GrAT. The course is a mutual activity of teacher and students based on the principle of learning by personal experience in the working group Ad 2. Examples of group exercise reports are: Inventory of small scale hydropower in Austria, Design and construction of an clay heating furnace, Maintenance technology in the tropics, Design of a bicycle for developing countries, Comparative research of claytechnology in architecture in Ghana and Austria, Trends in maintainabilty of consumer goods (white goods) in Austria Ad 3. The group report will contain proof that the students have understood the theory and are able to apply its methodology to the subject of research.
