Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions of one or more phases of a material into other phases. Understanding of phase equilibria and phase transformations like solidification as well as solid-solid transformations and precipitations.

1. Thermodynamics and kinetics of alloys: binary and ternary systems; thermodynamic and kinetics of transformations.

2. Diffusion: interstitial and substitutional diffusion, atomistic processes of diffusion and their macroscopic result.

3. Nucleation and growth from liquid-to-solid and solid-to-solid.

4. Phase transformations such as precipitaiton, spinodal decomposition, massive transformation, order-disorder transformations, and formation of equilibrium and non-equilibrium microstructures of steels.

5. Diffusionless transformations: the crystallography and kinetics of nucleation and growth of the martensitic transformation.
