Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand basic concepts from tensorial calculus, linear theory of elasticity, and a relation between elastic properites and crystal symmetries. The students learn about dislocations, their classification and relation to macroscopic material properties.

Subject of course

Elasticity:

  1. Vectors, matrices and tensors
  2. The stress and strain tensors
  3. The fourth rank tensor of elastic constants
  4. Other tensors describing physical properties of crystals

Theory of dislocations:

  1.  Properties dislocations:
    • Continuum idealisation vs. discrete view
    • Perfect vs. imperfect dislocations
    • Curved dislocations
  2. Elastic fields of straight dislocations in linear elasticity:
    • Stress fields
    • Energy of dislocations
    • Partial dislocations, stacking faults
  3.  Non-linear effects:
    • Peierls-Nabarro Model
    • Atomistic structure of dislocation core
  4.  Dislocations in real materials:
    • Dislocation sources
    • Observation, TEM principles of dislocation imaging
    • Dislocation motion, work-hardening
    • Critical thickness for dislocation-free thin epitaxial films
